Jakub Kopecký’s scenographic work is associated mainly with the duo of directors SKUTR (Martin Kukučka and Lukáš Trpišovský). Together with Simona Rybáková, he creates a distinctive visual style for these directors as visuality oftentimes acquires the meaning of spoken words. Theatre productions of this team reflect the tendency to understand visual elements as a complex unit – in an interaction with dramatic space and actors’ motion. These productions include: The Brothers Karamazov (2018), The Swan Lake (2013), Eugene Onegin (2015) and The Foam of Days (2016) from the Klicpera Theatre in Hradec Králové, or Blood Wedding (National Theatre, 2017), The Seagull (V Dlouhé Theatre, 2017), Radúz and Mahulena (National Theatre Brno, 2011) and others.
Kopecký creates scenographic designs in association with many other authors, such as choreographer Jan Kodet (Krabat, 2013/The Little Mermaid, 2016 National Theatre), directors Jiří Adámek (Tick, Tock, Politics, 2006 Alfréd ve dvoře Theatre / Europeans, After the Velvet, 2008 Roxy/NoD), Jiří Nekvasil (Pericles, 2008 Klicpera Theatre), David Drábek (Unisex, 2016 Klicpera Theatre), Lenka Vágnerová (Gossip, 2015/ Robin Hood, 2015 Minor Theatre), or with the leading dance company DOT504 (Mah hunt and Perfect Day, 2010 Ponec Theatre) and Cirk La Putyka (Dolls, 2014 and Honey, 2017).
After graduating from Václav Hollar Art School, Jakub Kopecký studied stage design at the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre at the Theatre Faculty, Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. Apart from stage design, Kopecký is also engaged in his own independent production (experimental projects of Pollygone 2007 and The Valley 2008), he is the author of several video projects (Discopigs 2002, Heroes 2006, Army House of Culture 2009) and graphic design (works for Roxy/NoD Experimental Space, festivals Dance Praha and Czech Dance Platform).
He was nominated for the Alfréd Radok Award for his stage design of Heroes (National Theatre – the Bouda Project, directed by SKUTR, 2006) in 2006 in the Scenography of the Year category.
