Martin Černý designed the sets for Ivan Rajmont’s productions – he worked with him in the theatre in Yaroslavl in Russia (King Lear), or Klicpera Theatre in Hradec Králové (Faust, 2001, All’s Well That Ends Well, 2004 and Don Juan, 2003). Together with Rajmont, he worked in the National Theatre with their first joint production of The Moth (1999) at the Kolowrat Theatre followed by Oresteia (2002), Coriolanus (2004), The School for Lies (2004), Three Lives (2006) and many others.
Martin Černý frequently does scenography for music theatre, he regularly works with director Ondřej Havelka: La Bohéme (State Opera Prague, 2008), The Tales of Hoffmann (National Theatre Prague, 2010) a My Heart Beats to the Rhythm of Swing (National Theatre Prague, 2015). His work also includes scenographic designs for ballet productions (Goldilocks, National Theatre Prague, 2006), he frequently cooperates with director and choreographer Libor Vaculík (The Blood Countess, J. K. Tyl Theatre, 2008, Faust, National Theatre Prague, 2009). As far as musicals are concerned, he has been associated with director Ján Ďurovčík (Painted on Glass, 2003, Blood Brothers, 2007, F. X. Šalda Theatre), or Antonín Procházka (Lemonade Joe, 2007, The Producers, 2006, Polish Blood, 2009, Sister Act, 2017, Karlín Musical Theatre).
Martin Černý graduated from scenography at the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre, Theatre Faculty, Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he now teaches. He is also an artistic director of theatre workshops
He received the 2011 Alfréd Radok Award for the production of Break of Noon directed by Hana Burešová in the V Dlouhé Theatre.
