The South Bohemian Theatre attracted 55,961 viewers, i.e. 1,475 viewers more than last year, to the revolving theatre in Český Krumlov. Total receipts from the revolving theatre are 37.6 million CZK, they rose by 17 per cent year-on-year with 91 performances, which is 6 more than last year. The year 2019 will see two premieres at the revolving theatre: the ballet The Sleeping Beauty and opera Turandot.

“We have come a long way in the South Bohemian Theatre’s 60th jubilee season. We have moved from an experimental revolving theatre for 40 viewers operated by local soldiers to the most frequently visited open-air cultural scene of the Czech Republic with its productions being positively welcome by viewers and professionals,” said South Bohemian Theatre director Lukáš Průdek.

The theatre is preparing eight productions for the revolving theatre in 2019. There will be two premieres: 24th July will see the ballet fairy-tale The Sleeping Beauty and the opera Turandot will premiere on 2nd August. Other productions include the musical Finian’s Rainbow, horror performance Dracula, comedies Decameron, The Wives of Henry VIII, opera Rusalka and The Lost World.

The revolving theatre celebrated 60 years of its existence last year. According to preservationists and UNESCO (Český Krumlov has been part of it since 1992), it disturbs the nature of the garden. The South Bohemian Theatre has made a rental contract for the garden with preservationists until 2020. The Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) told the Czech Press Agency at the end of August that the revolving theatre should stay where it is now. It has been visited by 2.3 million viewers since 1958.
