The opera biennial organized by the Musical Theatre Society in cooperation with participating theatres has been offering a comprehensive perspective on the work of companies from the Czech Republic and Slovakia since 1993. It focuses on how opera is staged as well as the overview of superior singing and acting performances, orchestras and choirs. The audience and the jury then decide who gets the awards called Libuška, the glass sculpture by Václav Hanuš.

The Critics’ Award for the best performance went to F. X. Šalda Theatre in Liberec for staging Leoš Janáček’s Cunning Little Vixen. The Audience’s Award for the best show went to the South Bohemian Theatre České Budějovice for the production of Arrigo Boito’s Mephistopheles. The second most successful show with the audience after Mephistopheles was The Cunning Little Vixen, Urban Ghosts performed by Ensemble Opera Diversa and The Marriage of Figaro staged at the Silesian Theatre Opava.

The Festival Director’s Award went to the National Theatre Opera for Leoš Janáček’s Káťa Kabanová.

Since 2007, The Committee of the Musical Theatre Society has given awards to figures/institutions that have significantly contributed to local opera theatre. The Musical Theatre Society’s Award for the Outstanding Undertaking in Musical Theatre went to Ensemble Opera Diversa. The company with professional musicians and singers based in Brno was established in 2003, thus it will be celebrating twenty years of existence next year. It has about thirty performances and shows a year, it has staged seven original full-length operas and two dozen mini-operas. The core of their activity is the extraordinary musical and drama production of the founding members Ondřej Kyas and Pavel Drábek, who has been the artistic director since 2015. The Committee of the Musical Theatre Society acknowledges the significant footprint Ensemble Opera Diversa has created in the Czech opera environment, as well as the restart successfully supervised by stage designer Sylva Marková.
